This book reports on pioneering efforts to move the treatment of substance-abusing parents forward by embracing their roles and experiences as mothers and fathers directly and continually across the course of treatment. Part 1 covers the theoretical understandings of how addiction impacts the developmental processes of parenting. Chapters address: the neurobiology of addiction and attachment, stress and parental addiction, impulsivity and addiction in parents, behavioral genetic perspectives on substance abuse and parenting, understanding and treating substance-use disorders from a psychodynamic perspective, transmission of parenting models at the level of representation, early origins of alcohol use and abuse and the challenge of assessing the risk-resilience continuum very early in the life of a child, and substance-abusing fathers from a developmental perspective. Part 2 discusses risk assessment, evaluation, and a variety of interventions and therapies. Chapters explore bio-psychosocial characteristics of parenting women with substance use disorders, the impact of parental addiction on child development, evaluation and interventions in the pre- and perinatal period, mentalizing-based intervention with mother-baby dyads, Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up, psychoanalytic-attachment oriented group interventions for substance-abusing mothers and their infants, the impact of parental substance abuse on children placed in foster care, interventions with adolescent and young adult mothers, Mothering from the Inside Out, working with states of mindlessness in substance-abusing mothers with personality disturbance, Fathers Too!, Behavioral Couples Therapy for substance-abusing parents, and family-based interventions for children with prenatal substance exposure.
