This article discusses how foster parents can reduce the uncertainty foster children may feel the first day of school. Strategies for preparing children before the first day include: help them feel safe by touring the school, meeting with the teacher, playing on the playground, introducing future classmates, and reviewing first day preparations; help keep them safe by communication with the school who has custody; give them some autonomy; collaborate with the teachers; be prepared in general; and explicitly show you care.
