This chapter emphasizes the unique challenges faced by lesbian and gay adoptive parents, including the ambivalent attitudes of adoption professionals, the social stigma attached to being gay or lesbian, the legal complexity of forming, maintaining, and protecting nontraditional families, and the internalized homophobia of lesbians and gay men who choose to parent. The advantages of having gay or lesbian parents are discussed, as well as current trends and best practices for counselors working with these families.
