This model curriculum for adoption workers is intended to improve practice with adoptive families within the Hispanic population of New Mexico. The one day program addresses seven competencies: awareness of culture; categories of culture; interrelationship of language and culture; influence of geographic location on language, culture, and livelihood; history of New Mexico Hispanics; cultural resources; and the application of cultural sensitivity to the adoption process. Handouts include a list of ways to say "very good" in Spanish, definitions of cultural terms, myths about Hispanics and adoption, a cultural awareness questionnaire, a time line of Hispanics in New Mexico, and related articles. Masters for overheads also are provided.
