This publication offers guidelines for adoption agencies that are considering providing profiles of children online. It draws on information gathered through surveys of agencies and subscribers to the British Association for Adoption and Fostering (BAAF) newsletter, and a survey of 30 websites in the United Kingdom on general information provided about adoption and fostering. Following an introductory section, the second section addresses particular issues around using the Internet for profiles of children. It discusses confirming permission to feature the child, involving the child, describing the child, and writing a profile. The following section discusses protecting the privacy of the child and the potential new families, recording an interest in a child, and providing an inquirer with a quick response. Section 4 outlines the responsibilities of social workers who are providing general content about adoption and fostering on the website, and child profiles. Management support strategies are also identified. The final sections provide information about website content, including suggestions for the design of the website, types of links, and writing style. 14 references.
