This article describes Intercultural Family Services (IFSI), a multicultural, community-based organization in Philadelphia that engages in critical reflection about cultural competence and has embedded their value of culturally competent practice into their mission. Key components of IFSI are explained, including cultural sensitivity, staff diversity, and staff cultural training and education. Tips for the recruitment and retention of culturally diverse staff are listed, and a case example is provided that illustrates the importance of cultural understanding. 5 references.
