This federally funded training module is the third in a series of modules intended to raise public awareness and understanding of child maltreatment, its causes, protective factors that help shield children and families, and manageable steps that can be taken to reduce the likelihood of child neglect. The training is intended for use with multiple audiences, including the general public, students, parents, caregivers, and practitioners. This module is designed to accompany a slide-show and a 15-minute video presentation that discusses how neglect can occur and also be prevented at multiple levels, identifies the six protective factors that help shield individuals and families from the risk factors of neglect, and demonstrates how protective factors play a part in the lives of training participants. The six protective factors that are highlighted include: parental resilience, social connections, concrete support in times of need, social and emotional competence of children, knowledge of parenting and child development, and nurturing and attachment. Instructions are provided on presenting the information to individuals, small groups, and large groups, and resources are listed. Questions for discussion and for a reflection journal are included.
