This fact sheet explains the longer children remain in foster care the more likely it is that they will be separated from their siblings. Reasons children are separate from their siblings are reviewed and the importance of the sibling connection for children in care is emphasized. The following recommendations are then made for professionals and care givers: give the youth a say in their placement and visitation options, when siblings are separated place the sibling sin the same community and with caregivers who will make a commitment to facilitate visits and contact, appropriate transportation should be provided, allow siblings to share material items that serve to remind them about their relationships, inform the youth about the reasons for a cancelled visit, provide training to adoptive parents about the importance of maintaining sibling relationships, and consider resources like summer camps or youth groups for siblings. 3 references.
