This article explains a child’s social land physical environment can further exacerbate existing mental health issues or cause more, as well as severely disrupt the child’s family stability. Statistics are shared on the incidence of mental health disorders in low-income youth and children in the child welfare system and juvenile justice system, and the Under the Rainbow program is highlighted. The program integrates free, accessible legal assistance into the child’s mental health treatment plan to improve the mental health outcomes and stability of families. Key program components are described.
