This chapter provides a comprehensive description and a historical overview of residential services as well as a review of the empirical findings regarding the outcomes of residential services. It profiles characteristics of children and youth in residential care, highlights case studies of children who have benefited from residential services, and outlines promising practices of model residential facilities. Finally, challenges faced by providers as they increasingly serve acute populations of children in an environment of decreasing financial reimbursement for services are discussed.
