Intended for professionals and parents involved in the care and education of looked after children in the United Kingdom, this resource pack includes a book and a CD-ROM containing a PowerPoint presentation and a set of handouts. The first part of the book sets the context for the training material and provides case studies constructed by practitioners in schools to illustrate the complexity of the lives of the children with whom they work. Information is provided on the number of children and young people in public care in the United Kingdom, legislation governing the care system and education services for looked after children, and key issues of concern to teachers of looked after children. The second part of the book provides notes to accompany the PowerPoint presentation. It addresses characteristics of looked after children, reasons for the behavior problems of looked after children and the impact of traumatic stress, developmental challenges and learning difficulties of looked after children, challenges schools face in managing looked after children, secondary traumatic stress, and how adults can help looked after children. A nine-point curriculum for working effectively with traumatized children is presented and tips are provided for applying the nine-step structure to dealing with individual incidents of post-traumatic behavior. The third part of the text suggests various ways in which the resource pack material can be used in training, supervision, and discussions. It also includes a list of key people involved in the education of looked after children, and a list of useful books. 32 references.
