Intended for foster parents, this brief discusses strategies for preparing foster youth to transition to adulthood. Practical tips for increasing independent living skills are explained and include: start early, offer opportunities to make decisions, increase expectations and responsibilities, look for every day teachable moment, and celebrate successes and learn from shortcomings. The importance of co-parenting with the birth parents when reunification is a permanency goal is emphasized, and a list of additional resources is provided.
