A history of intercountry adoption is provided and the experiences of South Korea, Guatemala, and Ethiopia are described. The push factors that increased international adoption are discussed, including war, poverty, the AIDS pandemic, and policy decisions, as well as the pull factors, including the ideology of Christian Americanism, economic growth and the creation of global family-making in the United States. Recommendations are made for intercountry adoption programs. 48 references.
