"Let the Spirit Lead" ICWA: In the Best Interest of the Indian Child" is primarily intended to provide today's social workers with a beginning knowledge of the Indian Child Welfare Act. The training provides a brief historical context of why and how the act was passed, and the purpose and requirements of ICWA, with special emphasis on noticing and inquiry, active efforts, concurrent planning, and expert witnesses. A brief overview of the Customary Adoption law and practice is included. Participants will review a comparison of American Indian values vs. contemporary Western values, and learn basic engagement strategies for working with American Indian children and families, involving important aspects of cultural and historical self-identification. Several important activities in this curriculum involve accessing the emotional responses of the participants to ensure best practices in working with Indian children and families. (Author abstract)
