This tip sheet for treatment providers explains key considerations for working with African families. The importance of the family and home in the African culture is emphasized, the roles of different family members are described, and the religious traditions of African immigrants are considered. Interventions when working with Africans and families are recommended and include using a strengths approach, developing or facilitating a community support groups, and recognizing the impact of the ethnic reality on the client's life and on his or her convictions. Tips for implementing cultural self-determination are listed and professionals are cautioned to remember the client is the best known expert on their culture and what will work best to respond to their presenting concerns.
