This 45-minute DVD features a webinar presented on February 25, 2016 that discusses the current rise in the numbers of infants with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS), policy challenges, and a systems approach to NAS prevention and intervention. Slides accompany the lecture and present information on the definition of NAS, opiate use patterns, the rise in the incidence of NAS from 1998 to 2012, the Medicaid costs associated with NAS, phase of AND, symptoms of NAS, and the uniqueness of the current epidemic due to the involvement of prescription drug use. The goals of methadone maintenance in impacting drug use are reviewed, as well as the impact of methadone on infants and the link between methadone use and more severe NAS. The lecture closes with recommendations for a new approach for preventing NAS.
