This training package is designed to assist child welfare professionals in understanding substance use disorders, mental disorders, and co-occurring disorders. It contains six modules that address: understanding the multiple needs of families involved with the child welfare system; understanding substance use disorders, treatment, and recovery; understanding mental disorders, treatment and recovery; engagement and intervention with parents affected by substance use disorders, mental disorders and co- occurring disorders; developing a comprehensive response for families affected by substance use disorders, mental disorders. and co-occurring disorders; and understanding the needs of children of parents with substance use or mental disorders. Each module includes a training plan that includes fully developed trainer scripts and PowerPoint slides and is designed to be presented in approximately three hours. The training plan, embedded within trainer scripts, gives guidance to a trainer presenting the module. The guidance describes how to conduct facilitated discussions, some of which are based on a printable vignette that follows the training plan. The time frame for presenting each component of the module is included in the training plan. The trainer scripts embedded in each training plan correspond to the PowerPoint presentations and provide details of the trainer's discussion of the topics. The trainer script references each PowerPoint slide by number. Some modules have handouts and additional attachments, and each module includes a list of resources where trainers and participants can find additional information on topics of interest.
