This policy paper advocates for the enactment of specific State strategies for preventing child abuse and neglect. It begins by explaining at least 1 in 7 children have experienced child abuse and/or neglect annually in the United States, and the need for a public health approach to the prevention of child abuse and neglect and policies that address the conditions and contexts in which children and families live. The paper then recommends that States prioritize children and families in both their legislative and budgetary decisions in 2021 through strategies that strengthen families and reduce child abuse and neglect. Recommendations are made and include: increase funding and access to evidence-based home visiting programs; expand family friendly workplace policies; strengthen economic security for families; invest in evidence-based programs to prevent child sexual abuse; and end the use of corporal punishment in public institutions. Background information is provided on each of the recommendations and strategies for implementing the recommendations are discussed. 20 references.
