This fact sheet explains that while families are social distancing due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many children are at-risk for child abuse. It urges New Jersey’s educators, guidance counselors, school nurses, and social workers to continue to be vigilant for instances of child abuse, and to call and check on families known to be struggling. It is recommended professionals provide students with a safe word to use if they are afraid and to try to get eyes on every child at least once a week. The hotline number to call to report suspected abuse or neglect is included.
