In Canada, as in the rest of the world, adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are recognized as a public health issue that can have negative health, social, and financial consequences. This chapter: (1) defines ACEs as a public health issue, as exemplified by recent analyses of Canadian data, (2) discusses implications of adopting a public health approach, (3) addresses policies and strategies to prevent ACEs, with a focus on maltreatment, (4) suggests implications for policy and practice, and (5) proposes directions for future research. Despite progress in establishing a Canadian evidence base to prevent ACEs and to mitigate associated impairment, further research is needed to strengthen prevention and respond to ACEs.
