Intended for Colorado school personnel, this guide explains the key role school personnel can play in preventing, mitigating, and reporting child sexual abuse and provides resources for assisting in the prevention of child sexual abuse. It begins with an overview of child sexual abuse and identifies evidence-based child sexual abuse prevention/personal safety programs. It is noted that the most effective programs include children as physically active participants, combine the techniques of modeling, group discussion, and role-playing/rehearsal, engage participants for longer periods of time than less effective programs, contain multiple sessions, and incorporate parents/caregivers. The descriptions of the 24 evidence-based programs include information on the goals of the program, target audience, content, and cost. Website information is also provided for each highlighted program. Section 2 also includes descriptions of 22 programs that have undergone internal evaluations or studies but are not listed by one of the national evidence-based/evidence-informed registries. Section 3 describes six programs to prevent human trafficking, and Section 4 highlights statewide government programs in Colorado. Sections 5 and 6 list statewide resources and coalitions and Children’s Advocacy Centers in Colorado. Final sections provide links to guidelines and protocols on juveniles who have committed sexually abusive and offending behavior, comprehensive health standards by grade that address child sexual abuse, the child abuse hotline, and six campaigns for preventing and ending child sexual abuse.
