This brief explains the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) effects thousands of children and youth in the United States every year, and notes federal legislation that requires child welfare agencies to develop policies and procedures for the identification of children at risk for victims of CSEC and to provide appropriate services. Information is then provided on risk factors for sexual exploitation, screening tools for identifying children who are victims or at risk of CSEC, and prevention programs. Key considerations regarding the placement of children in congregate care facilities are discussed and restrictions on the use of congregate care for children and youth under the 2018 Family First Prevention Services Act are explained. Final sections of the brief describe evidence based services for victims of CSEC, consider modifications of effective interventions for similar vulnerable youth populations that may be helpful, and provide links to additional resources. 2 references.
