This chapter reviews international data on the incidence, and nature of fatal child maltreatment, drawing on previous work to present a model for understanding the different types of violent and maltreatment-related child deaths. Six categories are described: overt filicide, covert filicide, fatal physical abuse, child homicide, fatal assaults, and deaths related to but not directly caused by maltreatment. Risk factors for fatal child maltreatment are reviewed, as well as strategies for preventing child maltreatment fatalities. 2 figures, 6 tables, and numerous references.
