Recent discussions of the ethical dilemmas that can confront schools of social work provide an opportunity to reflect on the role of schools in uncertain economic and political environments both within and external to their universities. The process of balancing environmental demands with professional ethics is fraught with challenges. Many such challenges are directly related to funding and the priorities of central administration. We examine three examples that suggest the need for an engaged practice and professional community to institute ethics-based gatekeeping in regard to (1) educational rigor and student enrollment, (2) school collaboration with community service programs, and (3) workforce development and deprofessionalization.
