This brief explains strategies that child welfare agencies can use to ensure children in foster care progress in their education during the COVID-19 pandemic and the shelter in place order. It recommends child welfare agencies prioritize education by focusing on four major areas: partnering with schools; supporting education and well-being of students; directly supporting caregivers; and addressing the needs of students with disabilities in foster care. Recommendations are made for each area and links are provided for tip sheets for schools and for addressing education in court proceedings.
