Intended to assist social workers, this brief provides cultural information on refugee families from Somalia. It begins by reviewing the history of Somalia and then discusses Somali culture, religion, family and community networks, child-rearing and child development beliefs, self-discipline and guidance, values surrounding school and education, health and mental health, and community leadership. Tips are provided in each area to help workers become more culturally competent when working with Somali families. The brief includes a list of resources.
