This webpage explains when public health emergencies occur, there is rapidly evolving information that may be confusing and lead to feelings of anxiety. It notes that knowing important information about the outbreak and learning how to be prepared can reduce stress and help calm likely anxieties. Resources are then listed that address how an infectious disease outbreak or pandemic might affect families both physically and emotionally, and what can be done to help families cope in times of public health emergencies. Topics addressed include: tips for helping families cope with the COVID-19 pandemic, age-related reactions to a traumatic event, skills for psychological recovery online, simple activities for children and adolescents who are sheltering in place amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, self-care strategies, family resilience and traumatic stress, psychological first aid, parent tips for helping school-age children after disasters, lessons learned from 9/11, tips for parents for helping children cope with a pandemic flu, tips for parents on media coverage of traumatic events, and tips for parents on helping children, toddlers, and preschoolers heal after a traumatic event. Some resources are presented in Spanish and Chinese.
