This chapter examines strategies and programs designed to prevent child abuse and neglect, identifying strengths and limitations of preventive efforts to date. It focuses on primary and second prevention and describes evidence-based strategies for physical abuse and neglect, followed by a description of programs designed to prevent sexual abuse. Home-based family prevention programs, school- and clinic-based prevention programs, and community-based child maltreatment prevention are addressed. Discussion questions are included. 34 references.
