This brief shares the experience of a birth mother participating in an open adoption and how and why her expectations have shifted. The need to set and keep realistic expectations is emphasized and key questions birth parents should ask are recommended. The questions address how often birth parents will be able to visit during the first year, visitation as the child gets older, and how a move on either side would affect the arrangement. The benefits of counseling are also discussed.
