This article explains reasons for the continued contact between children in foster care and adopted children and their birth parents, including providing children with ongoing knowledge of their origins, family history, and important information to help them chart the course of their identity formation; fostering children’s self-esteem by mitigating feelings of loss, rejection, self-blame, and abandonment; reassuring children of the well-being of their birth parents; and fostering sibling relationships. Key considerations when making decisions regarding continued contact are reviewed, and strategies are discussed for making the relationships work.
