This brief explains the COVID-19 pandemic and its associated social and economic stressors can undermine children’s development and well-being. It then highlights protective factors that can buffer children from harm and increase the chances they adapt positively to adversities such as the COVID-19 pandemic. These protective factors include: sensitive, responsive caregiving; meeting basic needs; emotional support for children; support for caregiver well-being; and social connectedness. Recommendations for parents and caregivers, communities, States, tribes, and territories are provided for promoting each of these protective factors. (Author abstract modified)
