This brief explains the ongoing stress, fear, grief, and uncertainty created by the COVID-19 pandemic can impact children and adolescents, and notes more than 140,000 children in the United States have experienced the death of a parent or grandparent caregiver from COVID-19. It then identifies common symptoms that may indicate signs of stress and mental health challenges in infants, toddlers, young children, older children and adolescents. The role of pediatricians in screening for depression and providing guidance on ways to support children is discussed, and information is provided on suicide risk and the need for parental self-care. Links to additional resources are provided.
