The standards are written to provide guidance for the field, improve practice, evaluate agency performance, and demonstrate the value of specialized adoption services with a focus on practices that center racial equity in adoption work. “The overrepresentation of children of color in foster care has gone on for far too long, and the workforce continues to be led by those who do not reflect the communities served,” says Kamilah Bunn, Chief Executive Officer of the NAA. Bunn stated, “We must educate our workforce at all levels that ethical practice means doing our work without bias always centering and honoring youth first and their unique culture and identity.” These revised standards include guidance such as: all children and youth need permanency at any age, members work on behalf of children of all ages, races, ethnicities, gender identities, and religions, and guidance on providing high-quality customer service to all prospective parents and families, including: kin and birth parents. The new standards were developed by a diverse group of NAA members that included experts from communities of color, tribal communities, LGBTQ experts, social work educators and those with lived experience.
