Intended for social service professionals, this book examines the ethical standards governing social workers. A framework is offered for considering ethical dilemmas and is designed to help social workers develop their own capacity for critical thinking in arriving at ethically sound decisions. The book begins with a discussion on what ethics mean and what it means to be ethical. Chapter 2 describes the formwork for examining ethical dilemmas and offers guidelines for weighing options for addressing the dilemmas. Each of the following eight chapters focuses on a particular area of ethics: self-determination, informed consent, competence, confidentiality and privacy, attention to conflicts of interests, maintenance of professional boundaries, professionalism and integrity, and nondiscrimination and cultural competence. Each chapter presents an overview of the ethical concepts and the related standards, a case example and discussion where the standard is violated, and another where the standard is upheld. The rest of the chapter is devoted to ethical decision making about a more complex dilemma utilizing the critical thinking framework introduced earlier. Chapters close with a case for social workers to address and questions for them to consider. The final chapter discusses strategies for managing fears and vulnerabilities and cultivating practices that ensure continued professionalism. Numerous references.
