This article describes the experiences of one pediatrician who observed the immigration proceedings of unaccompanied immigrant children. The toxic stress felt by unaccompanied immigrant children is explained, as well as the need for physicians to advocate for policies that provide humane treatment of all immigrating children seeking safe haven in the United States. It notes pediatricians have a platform to speak out against the detention of children and separation of families and highlights the negative health impacts of these actions and policies. The need to use a trauma-informed approach and asses the mental health needs when caring for the children is also noted.
