This article explains the difficulty in ascertaining the prevalence of child abuse before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. It notes statistics on child abuse reporting and examines the under-reporting and over-reporting of child abuse. Social workers are urged to reintroduce the phrase “I don’t know” back into their vocabulary and are reminded that intellectual honesty implies a commitment to a sincere quest for facts by means of solid evidence.
