The second volume of two, this text explores the underlying mechanisms of antisocial behavior from a genetic, environmental, and neurobiological perspective. Following an introduction, chapters discuss transdisciplinary and transnational approaches to studying and preventing antisocial behavior, environmental influences on the development of individual differences in behavioral and endocrine responses to stress, dysfunction in the neural circuitry of emotion regulation and its connection to violence, and neurobiological outcomes of evolution, genes, and the environment. Part 2 focuses on modern assessment techniques and includes chapters on neurophysiological and cognitive correlates of antisocial behavior, risk assessment in individuals with antisocial personality disorder, and differential assessment of neurological deficits in aggressive and violent behavior. Part 3 describes transdisciplinary approaches to prevention and treatment and includes chapters on the role of neurocognitive models in prevention research, the stressful effects of child maltreatment on the brain, psychosocial and pharmacologic treatment of substance abuse disorders, and science-based treatment of aggression and agitation. Part 4 includes chapters that share research findings that should inform criminal justice and public health policy. Chapter 12 addresses the use of an integrative model of assessment to assess violent offenders and Chapter 13 explains the creation of a collaborative model for treating substance abusing offenders. The final chapter discusses research limitations, recommendations for improved research designs, implications for prevention strategies, and the potential impact on criminal justice policies.
