To assist child welfare professionals, this brief provides an overview of selected factors that are critical to understanding child and family environments of Somali immigrants. Information is provided on Somali parenting practices, parent and child nurturing and attachment styles, attitudes toward emotional behavior and mental health, the role of kin and tribal networks, support networks in coping with daily challenges, intergenerational traditions and values, the roles of men and women in their family life and the socialization of the children, and experiences in the migration journey that may impact Somali families. 10 references.
